LAGO VILLARRICA

Saturday, Sunday, Monday, January 2-4, 2010

The moment I see the place, I know that this is where I want to stay. The colorful flowers hanging from the balcony and the windows. The German touch, lake Villarrica only a few hundred meters away and the giant snow covered volcano in the distance.

Ramiro insists we check out a few more place and we drive the 25 km to Pucon, a smaller place than Villarrica but much more touristic. Every street, nothing but souvenir shops and outdoor patios. The beach crowded with people, and parasol beach chair vendors. Upon checking out some of the hotels, we repeatedly hear “NO ROOM”.  The Chilean summer holidays have started and on top of that it is a weekend, a long weekend.

The Inn in Villarrica it will be. The second floor room is gorgeous, with a German overtone. Lots of space to put things, a nice sitting area with large patio doors overlooking the lake and the volcano.

Across the street is the malacon, where all day long people stroll back and forth. The beach is not all that great with its rough, dark sand, but we do not plan to spend much time at the beach.

We treat ourselves to a hot meal of Rainbow Trout, with tomato and avocado salad for me and for Ramiro a Poor Man’s Steak. (Steak topped with a fried egg and French Fries)  A nice bottle of White wine to wash it all down. We sin some more, and order Yogurt cake for dessert.

We take advantage of the long daylight and enjoy a one hour walk along the malacon and onto the streets downtown. The stores are closing, but the restaurants are full with people.

We decide to stay three nights so I can catch up on e-mails, accounting, bill payment, a few Rotary assignments a pedicure and a lot of relaxation.

There is something to do here for everyone. If not in Villarrica then you can spend the day in Pucon, which reminds us a lot of Banff. A person can rent a bike, drive to the hot springs in the mountains; go for a boat ride; enjoy the scenery or wildlife; visit one of the many waterfalls; shop for souvenirs, (not us) or eat at one of the many place.
The colourful sunset is a great way to close off these last few days.
