DIFFERENT LAKE, DIFFERENT VULCANO

Sunday, January 24, 2010

All we drive this morning is 50 km. I need some time to get a few things done and settle down for a few days. We’re not satisfied until we find the right cabin with internet. Which is not easy. It’s summer, it’s a weekend and we are in one of the most popular towns at lake Llanquihue, Puerto Varas. Most places are full, we’ll have to settle for two nights instead of three. But we’re early and have the entire afternoon.

This is the first time in weeks that we’re in a place with a real supermarket. The kind we’re used to at home. We both feel like little kids in a candy store and load up our cart with all sorts of things, we have not been able to buy for a while. Our toiletries are also starting to run low and need to be replaced.

I prepare a fresh green salad with the lettuce from Honoria’s garden and smoked  salmon. I have really missed my salads, but in the south very few vegetables are eaten. Ramiro finds a place to wash the car and I spend some time at the beach.

As I come back from the beach there is police every where and the street along the beach is blocked off. An army helicopter is flying over. I wonder what’s happening. Ramiro just finished washing the car and we hear airplanes flying over. Well, are we lucky, today is the air show. From our balcony we have the perfect view and watch the entire show.

We decide to leave the car at home and walk along the malecon to the centre. It’s quite a distance, but there are so many activities on the street and on the beach that the four hours seemed much shorter. The view of both volcano Osorno and Calbuca is spectacular.

Ramiro’s mouth is watering when he sees the two enormous chicken legs go into the oven. I make a special meal, with the agreement that if I cook, he cleans.

We feel right at home and are happy with our modern looking cabin. I could spend a week here. Especially with the beach only half a block away.
